An art print is defined as an ‘original’ print if it is published in a limited edition, signed and numbered by the original artist.
An original print is technically a unique piece of work as it is only produced as a limited edition, and each individual print is numbered by the artist, typically written as a fraction – for example, 12/100. The number to the right of the slash indicates the total number of prints published (in this case 100), while the number to the left of the slash, is the individual number of that particular art print.
For a genuine original art print, a certificate of authenticity or certificate should also be included with the print. On the certificate there will be additional specifications regarding the artwork, such as the materials used, signing date and signature of the artist.
